Endogenous Caulimovirids: Fossils, Zombies, and Living in Plant Genomes

نویسندگان

چکیده

The Caulimoviridae is a family of double-stranded DNA viruses that infect plants. genomes most vascular plants contain endogenous caulimovirids (ECVs), class repetitive elements abundant in some plant genomes, resulting from the integration viral chromosomes germline cells during episodes infection have sometimes occurred millions years ago. In this review, we reflect on 25 research ECVs has shown members occupied an unprecedented range ecological niches over time and shed light their diversity macroevolution. We highlight gaps knowledge prospects future fueled by increased access to genome sequence data new tools for annotation addressing extent, impact, role biology origin evolutionary trajectories Caulimoviridae.

Fossils and plant phylogeny.

Developing a detailed estimate of plant phylogeny is the key first step toward a more sophisticated and particularized understanding of plant evolution. At many levels in the hierarchy of plant life, it will be impossible to develop an adequate understanding of plant phylogeny without taking into account the additional diversity provided by fossil plants. This is especially the case for relativ...

Non-Retroviral Fossils in Vertebrate Genomes

Although no physical fossils of viruses have been found, retroviruses are known to leave their molecular fossils in the genomes of their hosts, the so-called endogenous retroviral elements. These have provided us with important information about retroviruses in the past and their co-evolution with their hosts. On the other hand, because non-retroviral viruses were considered not to leave such f...

Acidophilic Collembola: living fossils?

The existence of two groups of acidophilic (mostly present in soils at pH less than 5) and acidintolerant Collembolan species has been demonstrated concurrently by several authors in the course of biocoenotic studies. The examination of morphological features points to a strong relationship between acidophily and hypothetical phyletic relationships between both groups. In the light of Earth his...

Coelacanths as “almost living fossils”

*Correspondence: Lionel Cavin, Département de Géologie et Paléontologie, Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle, 1 rue Malagnou, CP6434, 1211 Genève 6, Switzerland e-mail: [email protected] Since its usage by Darwin (1859), the concept of “living fossil” has undergone multiple definitions and has been much discussed and criticized. Soon after its discovery in 1938, the coelacanth Latimeria was rega...

Plant Fossils in the Clarno Formation, Oregon

The Clarno formation was originally described by Merriam (1901) from outcrops at Mitchell and Clarno's Ferry, Oregon. Since that time the formation has been found to be very widely distributed throughout central Oregon (Wilkinson, 1959). It is composed of an unknown thickness of volcanic rocks and interfingering terrestrial sediments which contain a newly discovered vertebrate fauna and an abun...
